What you should know about Masterton Racing Club

Club in Masterton

Hawke’s Bay Racing has proud traditions that are certainly worth preserving, but we do need to keep evolving if we wish to be relevant for the next 150 years. In 1992 Hawke’s Bay Racing Incorporated was formed when the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, Napier Park Racing Club and Hawke’s Bay Hunt also for a short period Hawke’s Bay Harness Racing Club and the Dannevirke Hunt joined together under one umbrella. Each club had its own history, but there’s no doubt that together we are stronger, as we need to be to successfully meet the challenges that lie ahead. With Hawke’s Bay’s favourable climate and one of the best racing surfaces in the country, our Club will continue to be an important cog in the wheel of New Zealand racing.
Our aim is to fulfill our vision of providing excellence with integrity in all our services, which include hospitality and the provision of our facilities to members of the wider community, as well as to racing. To perpetuate the success of Hawke’s Bay Racing as a valued and respected leader in thoroughbred racing, entertainment and hospitality in Australasia. Provide high quality thoroughbred racing representative of established international standards. Continue to recognise and celebrate the rich heritage of Hawke’s Bay Racing.
Continue to develop Hawke’s Bay Racing to ensure the preservation and prosperity for present and future generations. Horse Racing in Hawke’s Bay is steeped in history and success, with horses and participants rated among the very best. Racing itself has been staged at the Hastings racecourse since 1866 and since that time it has been a major contributor and stimulant to the local economy. Economic impact reports measure the value added to the local economy at over 30m annually, with the equivalent of 320 full time employment positions sustained by the thoroughbred industry.
The Board of Hawke’s Bay Racing has a vision which is pure and simple, and seeks to nurture the foundations that have existed for nearly 150 years. After an 11 year stint at Ellerslie as Director of Racing, Andrew Butch Castles returns to Hawke’s Bay to take on the role as General Manager at HB Racing. Castles is looking forward to being involved in all aspects of the business and sees the fast growing HB economy as one that will provide many opportunities for HB Racing. Having raced a number of horses over the years from the New Plymouth stable of Allan Sharrock when not indulging his thoroughbred passion he can be found spending time with his wife and young family.
Richard is our Racecourse Manager and as such is responsible for keeping our race track in pristine condition and it is due to the efforts of Richard and his team that Hawke's Bay enjoys the reputation of being New Zealand's best racing surface. A Hastings local, Chris had a distinguished career with Tourist Kelt Motors. Married with 4 children who are across the world, his 7 grandchildren are spread far and wide, all thoroughly spoiled however when they come home for holidays. Peter has worked on the Hastings racecourse for over 22 years and as a result is on a first name basis with every blade of grass.
Peter also mans the gap in the morning for trackwork and maintains the safe training environment he is distinguishable by his sense of humor and positive outlook on life. Craig has a military background and brings a fair amount of brawn to the surrounds.
